The population of the European Union is roughly 447 million. It comprises twenty-eight member states and performs both political and economic duties. These duties cannot be accomplished without the involvement of its important institutions. The most important institutions of the European Union include; the European council, the European Commission, the council of ministers, and the European parliament.

The European Council

European Council comprises the various heads of the member states and the president of the European Commission. The heads of the member states are responsible for the nomination of the president of the European Commission. The council meets four times every year. The president of the European council often chairs the meeting. They meet to discuss topics that involve sensitive issues. Also, they discuss issues whose verdict has not been declared. Therefore, the European Council works together with the European Commission president to look into sensitive issues affecting the union.

The European Commission

The European commission comprises 28 commissioners together with the president of the European Commission. The heads of the member states nominate the president. They are responsible for the allocation of various commissioner posts in the union. The commissioners have a five-year tenure. They are under obligation to serve the interests of the European people rather than their own. Generally, the commission proposes legislation based on treaties, executes decisions taken by the European council, monitors the improvement of the existing rules, and ensures the member states respect the European rules. It is also accountable to the European parliament. As a result, the European Commission, parliament, and council work together to ensure the smooth running of the union.

European Parliament

The European Parliament consists of 751 members. It is the only institution that comprises directly elected members. The members of the European parliament have a five-year tenure. It is responsible for the preparation of the European Union laws. Additionally, it has control over the budget of the European Union. Furthermore, it takes into account the duties of the European Commission. It has a two-tier work organization; the committee meeting and the plenary session. The committee consists of 20 members. Legislation preparation occurs during the committee meeting while passage of legislation occurs during the plenary session. The European parliament accounts for the commission, thus, ensuring passage of effective legislations.

Council of Ministers

The council of ministers comprises ministers who are democratically elected by their home states. The president heads it. Elections for the council’s president occur after every six months. They are responsible for the preparation of the meetings of the council. The institution works hand in hand with the European parliament to adopt legislation. Additionally, it is responsible for enacting laws, a role that any other institution cannot perform. The decisions on the enactment of laws are usually made during the quality majority voting. Therefore, the council of ministers and the European parliament ensure that favorable laws are enacted and followed.

Overall, the European Union can achieve its various goals by the interaction between its major institutions. These institutions include; the European council, the European Commission, the European Parliament, and the council of ministers. They work together to enable the effective enactment of laws. Also, they ensure that the union’s member states respect the laws.
